June 2013 Newsletter 2

Dear Parents

Staff News – You may have been aware that we were having interviews for the Class 3 teacher this week and I am pleased to announce that we will be employing Andrea Norman from September 2013. She is currently teaching in Chesterton in a Year 3 class so she has had experience.  If you would like any further details then please contact the school.

Parent Governor Appointment – Following a letter sent out before the half term break requesting nominations for a Parent Governor, we are pleased to inform you that Mrs Abigail Aspin has been nominated and elected unopposed.  The Governing Body of a school plays an important and vital role in the management of the school, the three basic responsibilities being to set the strategic direction for the school, to act as a critical friend to the school and to be accountable to the parents and other interested agencies.  A Parent Governor is a representative parent, rather than the parents’ representative, and has equal status with all the other Governors.  He/she is not obliged to follow the majority view of the parents, but when necessary, can feed information to the governors from the parents.  We are sure you would all like to join us in thanking Abigail for volunteering to serve on the Governing Body.

Pam Smart – Acting Headteacher

Executive Head – At the beginning of this term you received a letter discussing the creation of an ‘Executive Head’ role at Kempsford. We are now able to let you know that this arrangement would be with Powell’s Church of England (VA) Primary School in Cirencester (http://www.powells.gloucs.sch.uk/) and their head teacher, Mrs Teresa Day. Powell’s is an ‘Outstanding’ school under both the OFSTED and SIAMS (Statutory Inspection for Anglican and Methodist Schools) regimes. Discussions between the schools have been underway for some time and we feel this to be a beneficial arrangement that develops skills and capability in both schools. We aim for the executive headship to be in place by September 2013 and it is expected to last through to the end of next academic year.

Andrew Doherty – Chair of Governors

Headlice – We have had a few cases of headlice reported.  Please check your children on a regular basis and treat as necessary.

Uniform – Please ensure that you clearly name all uniform and belongings to enable us to return any lost items to the correct owner.  We would also be grateful if parents could check the name tags in the uniform their children bring home, particular sweatshirts and cardigans, to ensure that they are not wearing someone else’s uniform in error.  Thank you.

Road Safety – Please can we ask that all parents drive and park with the safety of the children in mind at all times.

Speed  – We have had reports from the community that parents/staff have been seen driving quite fast through the village, and before an accident happens, we would ask that everyone please drives a little slower.

Parking – We would also like to ask all parents to park considerately at the beginning and end of the school day.  The main reason for this request is obviously for the safety of the children, but we would also ask that consideration is shown to those living near the school when parking.  At times, neighbours drives have been blocked at the beginning and end of the school day.  If it is essential that you park close to the school, please set off earlier from home to ensure parking spaces are available.  Otherwise, park further away from the school and have a short walk, which after all is good for us!  Thank you for your help and co-operation in keeping our children safer.

Singing/Instrumental Lessons – We currently have music teachers who visit the school and offer singing and instrumental lessons to children in Year 3 and above.  If you would like your child to have lessons, please let us know and we will pass your contact details on to the teacher concerned.  Lessons can be arranged for guitar, woodwind, violin and vocals.

Sports day, change of date – Sports day will now take place on Thursday 11th July, starting at 1.00pm and will be finishing at approximately 3.00pm.  Please send your child with a coloured T- shirt according to their House (e.g. Arkell = Yellow). If you are unsure which House your child is in, please see the class teacher. Thank you.

We hope to be providing a barbeque from 3.00pm onwards to coincide with the Open Evening.  At the Open Evening (3.00pm – 6.00pm) there will be displays of the children’s work in the classrooms.  During the sports afternoon, the village hall will be open for refreshments for parents to enjoy.
